Right here in Eromanga — in one of the world’s most remote locations, lies Australia’s most significant dinosaur fossil discovery. Australotitan cooperensis, nicknamed “Cooper”, is the largest dinosaur ever found on Australian soil. At over 30 metres long and weighing an estimated 70 tonnes, this titanosaur roamed what is now outback Queensland approximately 100 million years ago.
The Eromanga Natural History Museum tells the full story, from the original discovery on the Cooper family’s station to the painstaking excavation that followed. It’s a genuinely world-class experience, and it’s right on your doorstep when you stay at the Outpost.
Eromanga punches well above its weight for a town this far from anywhere.
Eromanga is home to Australia’s only independently owned oil refinery, a working
facility that processes crude oil extracted from the surrounding Channel Country. A
genuinely unique piece of Australian industrial history, and proof that this tiny town has always punched above its weight.

No outback trip is complete without a cold one at the local pub. The Royal Hotel is the real deal, cold beers, a proper counter meal,
local legends at the bar, and a atmosphere you simply can’t manufacture. Walking distance from the Outpost. Don’t leave Eromanga without dropping in.
The Channel Country surrounding Eromanga is one of Australia’s most dramatic and least-visited landscapes. Once you’ve seen it, you’ll understand why people come back.
The Red Dirt Roads – Drive the unsealed roads west and south of town and you’ll find nothing but red earth, saltbush, and an enormous sky. Best done at sunrise or sunset.
Cooper Creek Floodplains – The Channel Country’s famous braided river system, when it flows, it creates a vast inland sea. When it doesn’t, the dry floodplains are equally spectacular.
Stargazing – No light pollution for hundreds of kilometres. The night sky out here is unlike anything you’ll see near a city, bring a blanket and stay up late.
